Puppet Master - The Game Story?

Right, so this game is canon, at least as I've heard. And I have some questions about that.

What's the story?

Is it a time loop thing? Are we in Purgatory?

Does this have any relation to the 2017 reboot film? Why do people hate Puppet Master VS Demonic Toys so much? Which movies do count for this one?

Why are all these characters no longer dead? What happened to The Jester's human form?

Which film's version of the Toulon formula are the puppets using? Will other methods be introduced?
If the Demonic Toys are there, do they remember the previous crossover because it was in-continuity for them? (Like how in the Mortal Kombat games, the DC characters remember Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe even though the Mortal Kombat people don't / shouldn't. It's the other way round in Injustice 2, where neither groups should remember their last crossover but they do.)

Is the story revealed in-game or is it just the trailers? (Forgot about Toulon's Journal entries when writing that question, sorry.) What year is the game set in?

Is there any vaguely logical way to piece together a direct lineage of the puppets? Do the new films (Demonic Toys movies really because Puppet Master is mostly prequels now, from what I can tell) have any say in the game's story?

Are we playing as a character or do we all as players exist in the Puppet Master universe now?

Seriously, if anyone has answers, they're much appreciated.
