Yes, this happens. Yes, this is normal. Yes, they should tell you this when you start.
After seeing your pinned note, perhaps you missed the part with loosing my ENTIRE research tree of ships? No, it was not normal two seasons ago when all my tech tree was kept between seasons. I know how the game works (at least I believe I do). That's what I am complaining about. I keep insisting that they did something to the Steam accounts - either just #$@ them up or just clearing a bunch of inactive ones. Either way it IS disappointing from player's perspective. This is definitely not an incentive for returning players. I am not here to bash the team about it (although I am obviously $@%hurt :D ), I would assume that they had their reasons as such a move is bad for them either.
Seems like your account didn't get bound to Steam and you also didn't double check, whether it is. At some point, the guest account progress was lost.
