Or is it actually fair, fun, and worth buying?

Seeing some vids on youtube it'd seem that it's bad... But wasn't there a way to switch it to the Japanese version which doesn't cheat against the player? Or was that for another version?

There is a way to switch the version to Japanese in the Stadium and the Fighting Collection.
In Stadium, when playing on a controller press Back/Select at any point in the game list. (IDK the keyboard bind if you need it, but it will be in the lower left corner of the screen)

Fighting Collection has an additional Difficulty Level 0 that doesn't exist in the Stadium version.

Thanks for this info. I prefer to play with the EN version, but will play with the JP version.
