Area 88 / UN Squadron?
I wonder why it wasn't included in either of these collections?

Because they included Carrier Air Wing in the 1st collection. It's basically the same game, just without the paid IP. Area 88 is a licensed property. If a game isn't solely owned by Capcom, you will never see it in their collections. Same reason you will never see the Marvel vs Capcom fighting games here.

Hmm, when you say licensed items, do you mean the jets? Carrier Air Wing also has name brand jets like the F-14, perhaps they do not call it the F-14. I noticed Carrier Air Wing did not seem to mention them as much as UNS did.

Area 88 was initially a manga and also an anime not produced by Capcom, so it would be a licensed product for any names and likeness for the characters.

As far as the aircraft, those would also be trademarked to some degree from whatever their manufactures are.

License contracts only last so long and if they don't get renewed, they are no longer able to legally sell the combined product unless the developer or publisher fully owns the property within the game. This is why certain games disappear from the digital stores after a while.
