Is this like Starsector
Is Starcom like Starsector in complexity or is it just a very simplified version?
Does the ships in this game have different radar ranges, can you hide from radar in asteroid fields or behind solid objects, does the ships have transponders, long range fusion missiles, railguns and point defenses?
What this game has less then Starsector?

The weapon systems are well is ... simpler:
Phase turret that you can use as PD (that's what I am using on my build)
Missiles that so far can split in 2 or 3 depending on what you researched (not sure if there's another variant)
Fixed gun ( Your railgun, which also has a canon variant).
Havoc (Your anti-air/missiles, flak solution)
And there's a laser beam as well, which honestly, I didn't try.

I feel it's more about exploration and a little bit of combat sprinkled on top.
Still early in the game right now - having fun.

But honestly, there's nothing like Starsector out there. (maybe x4?).

What this game definetely does not have according to Starsector is large factions with a lot of space "traffic" and conflicts.

Thanks. The question I have is should I start with Starsector or Starcom. I haven't played either one yet. Yesterday I tried out Starsector briefly, watched a few gameplays previously and I have to say that I like it.
If Starsector is better then I'll probably start with that game.
I also found a cool The Expanse mod, but it's from 2021 and no longer works with the new version. So I'll have to keep looking or i stick to play the base game.

Depends on what type of experience you are looking for.
If you want massive fleet battles, a 'living world' experience, and a steeper learning curve, go for Starsector.

If you want a more 'casual' experience, exploration and a star trek experience, go for Starcom. Personally, I am enjoying Starcom a lot as I prefer less complex game when I am tired.

And just unlocked the Fission missile variant - going to give it a try in a few :)
And it's cool you change the weapons variant on the fly - without docking at a station :P

Cheers.

Personally I would try this game to ease into the space genre where all systems are simplified, to familiarize yourself with typical concepts associated with the genre.

I once played a game called Star Traders: Frontier, and although I liked it, it had such a steep learning curve, that if I felt like I lost my grasp of the game, I would quit. I just didn't like the sinking feeling that I had a less-than-optimized ship.
Starsector is a sandbox game. Starcom is a narrative driven exploration game. I love both but they are different niches of the genre so it depends on your preferences

STARSECTOR is a highly refined, detailed, well-designed and enjoyable space sim.

STARCOM is a granny-state WALKING SIMULATOR set in space.

"Personally", I would try COSMOTEER for these reasons:

  • Ideal for players of all skills
  • Offers way more features than STARCOM without fear of information overload
  • QUEST MARKERS
  • Superior ship design, drafting, blue printing
  • Doesn't get boring after 2 hours in and destroying the pirates
  • More extensive player base, richer wiki documentation
  • No fear of being nagged to death by the developer to "send in your savegame" should you ever get stuck
