This quest will progress on its own without further action.

It didn't for me. I literally finished the game and never heard anything from this quest ever again...
I have literally explored every planet on the map (checked with console commands) as well as a decent chunk of the empty space between. I read somewhere, that you need to be 20k AU from anything else? I was more than 50k from anything else and nothing happened.

ya I got this mission mid-late game. It really is just a matter of playtime. After visiting a few more new planets and finishing other missions it eventually resolves itself.

Maybe if you get it too late in your playthrough, there aren't enough flags to trigger it? Or maybe you need to jump X amount of times or play Y amount of minutes? idk how the game tracks the mission but for me at least, I had enough content in the game to keep playing that it was able to trigger on its own.
the remainder of the quest is done at the space station by talking to Lt Gliese and Dr. Rama

I had the quest after only a few hours in. I played at LEAST 5 times as many hours in afterwards and didn't get anything.

I had talked to everyone in the station at least several dozen times after the 'mysterious damage' happened. And it never came up in conversation or gave additional conversation options. So no, that is not the case either.

If this is mission is still unresolved, send me your save in game (f8) and leave a comment here and I'll take a look.
