Is the game play something like space pirates and zombies type of style but less "goofy" looking? Can you build ships that can fire broadside or do ships have to be symmetrical?

1. Pretty much yes.
2. There's both turret type weapons, and fixed direction weapons - most tend to put the fixed weapons pointing forwards, but you could put them all on one side and circle around. No need to be symmetrical.
