How do you deal with early game elites?

I am currently trying to bring down the shields for the star lance, and I can't attempt to destroy the power source on the planet because there are 2 elite devout frigates in the system. There's also an elite destroyer in the system with the starlance. I've only manages to kill 1 elite destroyer and it took forever. Is there something I'm missing? Or do I just need to grind for a better ship?

If you're talking about the shielded space station, the power beam from the planet has a limited range...

Otherwise yeah you need a better ship. Maybe go clear a few asteroid and debris fields.
