The simplest way appears to be:
- Close the game
- Save a copy of Technologies.json FIRST
- Search through the Technologies.json file for technologies which expand your hex count (e.g. Compact Construction, which increases the hex count by five)
- Buff the bonus applied by the technology
- Save
- Start the game
The problem with this approach is: Even assuming you're the only faction or player taking advantage of the upper limit on hull sizes, there's a limit to how easily your computer or graphics adapter can render that many hexes without a performance hit (that is, don't expect to build a ship of 200 or 300 hexes without some drawbacks). Please do be careful. :)
