What does the giant arrow mean?

Sometimes there is an arrow in front of my ship. What is it supposed to indicate?

That is the heading vector that shows during combat in default, you can change the setting in option.

For fixed guns mainly, from what I can tell so far.

Might also be useful if you were, to for example, build a ship that is a "ring" shape and doesn't have any easy directional visual queues as to what side of the ship is facing and where. I can see it being useful in several ship designs.
