The map isn't full of systems, but the ones which are spaced far apart are done so intentionally.
Very broadly, all the game's current content takes place within a circle of about 600,000 AU diameter (so, 120 grid squares across) The maximum zoomed-out view I have for the map is about that -- a square spanning (-60 x -60) to (+60 x +60)
Most (if not all) of the content of the main story will be encountered with the aid of clues, special missions, etc. and will put a player within reach of at least one wormhole gateway or flinger, so there's no need to fly across the map.
