It would be really nice if we could research cloaking devices.
(At least) two notable enemy types have cloaking. It would be real nice if we could cloak. It would enable some interesting strategery, and also let us plain sneak through situations that sometimes otherwise require other strategies.

It would pair really well with weapons that are good at turbo-smashing engines, like forward-firing weapons.

As for BaLaNcE, well, here's some thoughts:

1. If you're cloaked, the generators have to switch off, meaning that you're on battery power.

But I don't like that. I prefer:

2. Cloaking is a high-draw item, but with enough reactors you can just bulldozer through! However, if you're shooting, hard-thrusting, launching missiles, etc, enemies can still target you, just badly. Missiles and such can't follow you and will just go straight ahead, either from their launchers or from whatever heading they were on when you cloaked.

I would also say, cloaking should be a lot cheaper the smaller your ship - by which I mean Scout, Cruiser, etc. Give us a reason to use the smaller cockpit again. Don't base it on the number of hexes used, make it explicitly based on the cockpit size.

I have considered player cloaking devices. The main reason I never implemented them is that the game logic makes a number of assumptions about how NPCs and entities can/will respond to the player, and the player being undetectable at close range would likely break those assumptions.

I'm not saying I'll never implement it, but it's a bigger feature than it might sound.

Fair enough, and understandable.
