Escape Velocity Nova was incredible but is abandonware and I dont think anyone ever bothered to crack the DRM
I have EV Nova files and play it every few years jsut to get billions of credits and pirate stuff. windows 11 or whatever.
Escape Velocity Nova got a community edition that makes it work better on modern systems

SPAZ and Reassembly would be my suggestions too, even if they're a little different than this one. Never played SPAZ2 though, heard mixed things about it.

There's another similar builder type game called "StarShip Constructor", that I can't really recommend, because it is abandoned and very buggy, but I still want to mention it, because it has this ominous dark feel to it in its graphic and sound design that I really liked and don't really see in other space games. The backdrop has those constant lightning strikes going on while you have this dark music playing as an undertone in the background. Ship explosions feel heavy and impactful. Even just engaging your boosters felt really bass heavy, which just added to this dark feeling. The trailer unfortunately does not convey all of this in the slightest, thanks to the loud garbage music, and there's just a couple videos of it on YT from an old build before the game revamped into a more open universe. I think some developers could at least take note of this one.

Wayward Terran Frontier might also be worth a mention, but that's also kinda stuck in development hell for a long time and feels a little directionless.

I'm a HUGE fan of "Starsector": It's not on steam and maybe never will be, but it has a shockingly large fanbase, frequent updates, and a lively modding scene. One mod even evolves the game into more of a RTS, which is honestly a ton of fun. THAT SAID, it's more punishing than this one. Play the tutorials and make certain you understand them! It's totally possible to wind up stranded in deepspace at some random star with no fuel if you haven't planned ahead.

That's more like a Mount & Blade in space though. Not bad but a very different feel imo since you don't really have "your" ship.

If you go over to Good Old Games there's a free game called Endless Sky. I played a bit of it and it seemed quite decent!

Endless sky is also on steam, its good, but very slow to update.

It's open source, so if you can and want to, you can very much contribute to it yourself to help speed up the development.
