You usually get enough research early on that you can pick and choose, there's not really much in the way of 'bad' research.

Normally I get the Scanner Mark I ASAP, and the trainings that increases resource drops and scanning efficiency. After that it's mostly things the increase engine speed (you're going to be doing a lot of flying), scanning range (again, you're going to be doing a lot of flying), a little plasma (for dealing with the things you see when doing a lot of flying), and then whatever else as you go along. Running out of energy for shooting? Buy more +energy stuff, etc.

i always start with getting everything that increases detection range. just to make sure i don't miss anything that might be on the edge of the main paths.

after that its generally upgrading my main weapon type i'm going to use and power generation, then engines. and i fully invest into shields whenever i get them, and always keep an eye on my module count to save up to expand my ship as needed.

Everything is good, its a matter of what you like as your play style

Just be aware you won't get enough research to get everything later in the game (but early techs are pretty cheap), so you'll need to specialize at some point, at least with regards to weapons
