Starcom: Unknown Space
After maintaining radio silence since I wrapped up development on Starcom: Nexus, I’ve been hard at work on a follow-up title, tentatively called “Starcom: Unknown Space”.
There’s a lot of work left to do, but I’m hopeful that it will be ready for Early Access in 2022, with closed betas starting very soon.

Overall, players have strongly expressed the opinion that the game play shouldn’t change too much from Starcom: Nexus. So my goal has been to create a new story, with new races, new mysteries in a new universe, but not change too much of the mechanics.

That said, there are some interesting new changes:

New Shipbuilding System
You’ll still be able to fully customize your ship build, but the system has been completely overhauled. Modules now come in different shapes and sizes, depending on their type and “level” and can be rotated, opening up a lot more design possibilities.

Crew / Skill System
In Starcom: Nexus, your crew was basically just a resource who occasionally got eaten/vaporized/diseased on away missions. In Starcom: Unknown Space, you will have a persistent command crew that can progress overtime in several key skill areas. Along with this, anomalies and alien interactions can have skill checks and observations, adding another dimension to your choices.

New Narrative System
Less visible to the player, but equally important, I’ve created a completely new mission/narrative system. My hope is that this system is more robust and flexible, allowing me to craft more interesting stories and missions that weave together encounters, anomalies and factions with greater depth.

More Everything
This is more of an aspiration than a feature, but I hope to spend more time in Early Access creating an even bigger universe.

Thanks for reading! Don’t forget to wishlist!

Having played the original flash game back in the day, and then purchasing Nexus on GOG. I am excited that the series is continuing. And I look forward to the release of Unknown Space regardless of the platform.

Looks to have some exciting Starflight vibes...

So pleased to find someone else who played and loved Starflight back in the day. Such a great game, one of the granddaddies of the genre, and an awesome twist leading into SF2. So good.

I'm interested to see how the ship building will work. I'll have to get my designs from Nexus and copy them over

Will there be a signup for the closed beta or do you mean it is an internal beta?

First few rounds of close beta invites will go to random people on the mailing list. If you saw the game announce in your email, you're already on the list.

(If not, the sign-up is here: http://www.starcomnexus.com/survey/)

What a great reveal, I secretly hoped you where busy with the next iteration of Nexus. I know you said you'd be working on the next one, but one thing is to say and another is to do. Glad you are delivering, what a champ

Excellent news! I was really happy when I read the email. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the chance to be a part of the closed beta :-) There are too few games like Starcom and many of them just don't have the right feeling. I don't normally buy games in the early access phase but in this case I'm more than willing to do it.

Awesome! I played through the game earlier this year and left a positive review because of how much I loved the exploration. This might be a rare day one purchase for me!

SOOOOoOooooooo Awesome!! Looking forward to playing.

The Video trailer on Steam just shows how much work has already gone into the game, and it looks like we don't just get more of the same, but just plain....more.

I'm hyped for this and will be making that pre-purchase as soon as it's ready.
