I don't really... get it?
The game has this neat shell of a space exploration game, you travel planet to planet launching your crew and having what seem like random encounters and rolling for an outcome ala D&D (None of the content is procedurally generated apparently though)
The combat feels alright, very boiler plate space combat. Click to shoot, eventually get missiles to have two buttons to press. Even a little heal boost ability on a longish cooldown.
But that doesn't make combat very interesting, ultimately you see an enemy and click in their direction. Thats pretty much it.
The random outcome of events based on two dice rolls (two d10 seemingly, one for the tens place, one for the ones place to determine a bonus of up to 99%) makes everything feel completely out of your control. Even a leveled crew only provides like a 20-30% bonus to a roll, but that is still only about 1/4th of the outcomes being changed from effectively a coinflip.

The game has a story but it is SERIOUSLY lacking any kind of breadcrumbs so I have spent like 5 of my 7 hours of gameplay just flying randomly into space hoping to run into something interesting, but mostly just in the darkness of space.
Alien races vary from "Don't care you exist at all" to "Attacks on sight" and they just feel randomly dispersed with no real bases or areas of control (or at least, its very loose?)

So like... what is the game?
You just wander space randomly hoping something interesting happens and you have a good random outcome instead of a bad random outcome?
The rewards from combat are so negligible compared to exploration that fighting is rarely worth your time other than just to fight stuff for the hell of it, or because they are close to something you want to explore.

The game desperately needs more meat and potatoes. Add breadcrumbs, point players in an interesting direction.
Provide better player control over outcomes. Give the alien species some actual role, give them large areas of control and enable a reason to be diplomatic or not. Give them some alliances, have them seek retribution for their allies. Add some layers to combat, let the player divert power to different systems of the ship during combat to actually influence how combat goes besides 'click enemy till dead'.
Starcom suffers the same combat issue as Starfield: There is no way to find combat if you want it. You just have to randomly travel space hoping to run into something to fight.
If you add combat to a game, give the player some means of finding substantial combat.
Let the players take combat missions or something.
The game is wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle.

For years I looked for something that would match the first game I ever bought, Starflight II. This surpasses it in story line, ship design, and of course graphics. Game play exploration and combat is engrossing and time flies.

An absolutely phenomenal game. It has everything I've ever wanted from a space exploration angle. Great job Devs!
