Gotta say that the SP campaigns alone are worth the few bucks you have to pay during the sale. Multiplayer matchmaking will become more inconvinient to pull off once the GameSpy servers shut down, but there is already a replacement server in the works that'll go live when the official servers go down: http://www.gamereplays.org/kaneswrath/portals.php?show=page&name=gamespy-closure-new-service-announcement.
Recommendation: Buy the game, its awesome. No, really, it is. Any game with ship sinking killer dolphins, war bears, tachikoma style Soviet spider mechs and Japanese psionic school girls ripping tanks apart deserves a try.
You get a co-commander for every mission, who can actually save your life if you are in danger. You get to order them around as you please, telling them who and when to attack or move. If you don't feel like playing with the computer, play with a friend, as there is also CO-OP CAMPAIGN! (Something I REALLY love to see in games.)
Although I feel that the defenses are a bit overpowered, it quickly balances out when you start bringing out the heavy units. I won't spoil any more, so I will end it off by saying this:
All in all, it's a pretty dang good game.
