I've been doing tech support and fixing on these old games for over a decade, and it's been a real problem to release any tools to help people fix things because everything just gets marked as suspicious by these dumb things.
Just add an exception in your antivirus app
* Game was updated to include some form of data mining in the bin bundle.
* It's some generic data miner that borders on purebred malware by definition.
* AVs pick up on it because it shows malware traits, or is already flagged via other, shady includers of said software.
Why I think it isn't implausible:
1) EA is evil (verified fact).
2) EA will do anything to squeeze a buck (verified fact).
3) Data mining is the new oil of the soulless (known market fact).
4) EA has no soul (proven fact).
5) It, like, makes total sense, man.
