I thought this too, at first, but:

• How do we talk to the NPCs?
  
  
• How do we climb while holding something?
  
  
• How do we drink potions?
  
  
• How do we jump?
  
  
• Why is our perspective as if we are standing on legs?
  
  
• Our hitbox makes zero sense otherwise.
  
  
• Why do we get damaged when walking on hazards if we are not actually walking?
  
  
• How does SUS-scary-us choke me, daddy (when we ain't got no neck)?
  
  
• Explain how the hell we "sit" on a couch.
  
  
• There is literally an image of a full-bodied character holding the Heritage Sword.

Seems more like a concept that Kira thought about but maybe discarded somewhere along the way for practical reasons.

HOWEVER...

If you've ever played Dread Delusion, and I highly recommend it, there is SO MUCH cross-contamination between that game and this one. So much so that I feel like they have almost the exact same underlying causal "lore". Hardly surprising, since I believe Kira worked on their game for a while.

In that game, there is also a very similar concept (spoiler time): There is a land of undead folks, and the primary quest there involves the player rescuing the daughter of an important zombo NPC. You find the daughter, and, well... All that is left of her is an animate, severed hand. Sound familiar?

I do think Kira had this idea in mind but let the idea go by the wayside somewhere along the way due to gameplay and story-telling challenges.

I'm very pro "just a hand" interpretation. But it feels like something that the game sets up in the early cutscenes but them doesn't commit to. Perhaps we could be a floating hand attached to some kind of ghost? But it's strange then that we have footstep noises, even an option to choose what ones.

So the game sets this up but then doesn't follow through.

In the intro. first our body gets thrown out, than our hand. Perhaps we're just a body with a floating hand like Rayman.
Also we DO choose our portrait at the beginning.
In the end for me, the hand is a tool to hold other tools. the symbolic represantation of wha happened to us. What we look like is up to our imagination. That's why You can upload Your own image as a portrait

What if, we play the full character, but our hand is still severed and just floats a foot in front of us? That way we only see the hand, but the rest of the character is there to deal with the inconsistencies?

Come to think of it... The Rat King (one of the story the skeleton bro tell to us) got one of his hand severed too, before being thrown in the Well... I wonder there is a link....

The game opens with a cut scene that shows that we are just a hand.
It's pretty much just a bit of a joke about how these older games that influeced this used to draw the character so i wouldn't read too much into it.... you know a joke like Sheryl the Crow

its most likely a joke on how Kira’s other protags dont have hands (Spookys, Lost In Vivo…)

Facts, it's pretty obvious our severed hand AND body both got dumped down the well. At least Kira was nice enough to replace hand lore with a new worst part of the game (pronouns)
