I was a melee build with 85 STR at the time and hadn't put a single point into INT, but trying to fight him made me get my INT to about 40 whilst I explored elsewhere and collected weapons/spells I hadn't gotten until I went back and used Ice Tear and it absolutely obliterated him. Kinda sucked having to completely throw away the playstyle I used the entire game, but the game was so good its very forgivable in the end.
collect all 3 black books. You can get one by leaping off the side of fanu castle, one from defeating prince crilal, and one from a passage in the catacombs. The third book will net you Moon Beam. Failing that collect Lava Chasm from Terminus prison. Lava chasm will slow Sucsarius up and deal damage and multiple moon beams will shred his health.
The problem is that Sucsarius is almost exlusively melee-focused, where he does plenty of damage, inflicts poison, and blocks, with plenty of melee range to make spacing and kiting in melee with him kind of pointless (or just exhausting).
He has literally one projectile attack that is super easy to dodge and is very telegraphed. I beat him using mainly Lava Chasm with some Blessed Wind spam thrown in, and it was mainly Lava Chasm carrying the day.
And considering that I was a Strength build with a melee focus, that feels really disappointing. I had been doing okay previously using Moonlight, but after a certain point Moonlight stops firing its charged projectile for some reason. My other melee weapons just weren't doing enough damage to keep up with his regen (and tanking the damage he was dealing me).
As for ranged weapons...the best I ever found were Double Crossbow and Twisted Branch. Which is just odd, because you can get Double Crossbow really easily and very early. Fishing Spear is good for its flexibility and respectable damage, but its really slow charge-up makes it kind of painful and slow in a long fight. By contrast, there are tons of late-game melee weapons to find (Limbo, Moonlight, Saint Iishi, Shining Blade, Blade of Ophelia, and more). If melee has a problem, it's that too many melee weapons are just bad by the time you can even get them. Only the bow has that problem for ranged.
