Why is there a hole full of rat with no exit in the prison ?

So I was in the prison and there was this room with a body hanged over a hole the size of the room, so I jump and there is the bottom is just a black void with rats, I killed the rats and rat queen and rat king spawn and attack me, after I kill them all I check for exit or anything but there is nothing. It's just an empty void full of rat

Is there something I miss ? Because I don't really get the point of the hole ? Was that suppose to be a death trap ? This hole just really confuse me
