memory leak?
so..long story short i first beat this game a couple of summers ago on the same pc i have now, except i've upgraded a bit since then. not perfect by today's standards and very much due for an upgrade, but i think that's besides the point. i've noticed as i get closer and closer to the end of the game that it takes a ridiculous amount of time to load areas, as well as horrible combat lag to the point that this game is virtually unplayable. i recall way back when having the same loading issue with the game and being able to fix it somehow, but i'm not sure what to do about this combat lag now. anyone have any ideas?

edit: if i disable the sound, the game runs much smoother but than crashes a few moments into the game.

This is an old problem that, though has been somewhat addressed with some patches released, seems to not be quite fully "fixed" yet. It's not too bad if you have a decent computer with ample RAM (but over time, it can get worse with longer loading times and eventual slowdown), though it seems some hardware setups are more prone to this problem than others.

A couple of things that might help is;
* Have your graphic and sound drivers, DirectX and NET Framework all up-to-date.
* Turn off the game's "Persistant Gore" option (it seems that "gore" objects don't remove themselves from memory otherwise).
* Lower some of your graphic settings a bit.
* It if gets too bad; Make a save point, quit the game completely and re-load (perhaps once per hour might do).

Another possible tip that might help some Users of Windows 7 & 8, is to set the game's main executable file, daorigins.exe, to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP or Windows 2000 (some report that XP mode works better, others say that 2000 mode works better). I have Windows7, and I have daorigins.exe set to run in Windows 2000 mode, this along with turning off Persistant Gore, seems to have greatly improved loading-times and reduce / help-prevent slowdown problems.

The best remedy I have found is one the above poster mentioned. Save, and exit all the way to desktop every hr or so. Really does help.

It also helps to force the game to run in dx9 mode. This is done with a command line switch

thanks guys, unfortuantely before i saw these suggestions i was forced to cheat my way through the very end of the game using the killallhostiles command; i'll definitely be keeping these tips in mind though as i feel the urge to begin yet another DAO playthrough; this will be my third complete playthrough to date.

Greetings All!!! I have discovered the secret to continued gameplay even after the Memory leak crashes start. You have to download this memory enhancement tool and apply it the DA application exe file. see link: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/

After 2 years searching for a way to fix this, the only thing that works is this app which allows for 4 GB of memory to be allocated to DA Origins as opposed to 2 Gb which dont seem to be enough. I have tested this and can now play all the DLC without crashing! hehehehe

except you didnt apply the patch to the steam exe because copyright protection prevents it from launching after its patched. Maybe you got pirated or origins version who knows, but you didnt apply that patch to the steam version and run it.

This DOES work with the Steam version. Unfortunately I can't post this guide on the Origins hub but only on the Ultimate Edition hub for some silly reason. Yes, patching the Steam .exe doesn't work afaik so yeah... take a look.

Tell me how it goes.

thanks, I can confirm launches fine.

Do steam achievments still unlock with this? I see this one bypasses the forced launcher load so I guess I will also be able to automate cpu affinity as well.

As I said in my guide achievements will still function like normal.

Oh, my apologies Sir-rah. I never bought the Steam version only the Hard case retail Ultimate Edition, i just commented here to let ppl know there is hope to complete ALL the DLC, and i NEVER pirate games i support the game industry to the fullest!

Also, (very important) for some reason i cant save games using the save game option in menu anymore, the only way i can save progress without crashes occurring again is by using quick save ONLY. Unfortunately... Wish Bioware would release like a 5th anniversary remastered DAO Ultimate Edition with 4K textures, repaired memory leak, and most importantly DA2 follower walk! :'p

I feel like I'm missing something... but the retail edition's .exe can be easily patched by the 4 gb tool without any need for a replacement .exe like the Steam version needs.

Making your game LAA will solve the crashes more or less.

K thx. :')
Yeah i LOVE the LAA tool, because of that great little tool i have been playing my 2nd favourite game of all time for months without those awful crashes! If u only knew (or maybe u do?) how many times i had to reload the final 3 missions of the main Origins campaign due to memory leak crashes you would gasp in disbelief, like 92 reloads just to get Alistair to land that final slow motion blow on the Arch Demon Dragon on the roof of the castle... The game just doesn't do well in keeping track of multiple saves, but then there really is a ton of information to collate for that game, kinda like the Matrix! :'p

PS: You probably already know this but the LAA tool works great for DA2 it stopped the crashes from happening in that game too, along with something else i altered, which i cant remember at this time, darn... But i mostly use the LAA for the Ultra HD textures mod for DA2.

I Know this is a necro but i found the fix. Use cacheboost. It will "purge" the leaked memory. I am using it now and no crashes since then. i hope it helps. here is the link.
