Should I bother playing as a Rogue?
I wanted to play as a Rogue since I haven't done that yet, but from what I remember Rogue was painfully weak especially compared to Mages. Did they ever buff Rogues?

rouges are my go to class in this game, you can build them up to be really powerful.your companions are terrible rouges but decent mages and warriors, you playing a rouge makes your whole party stonger. they detect traps open locks and make pretty darn good DPS characters.

Is ranged or melee rogue better?

I like playing ranged rogues(personal preference), but melee rogues get more abilities to play with. Either style is equally effective, just go with what you feel comfortable with playing for your character.
If you choose to play as a rogue, I recommend you play as city elf, regarding the fact that you get the fang as city elf only. combine it with the rose thorn, and you'll kick ass.

I completed the game as a dwarven melee rogue with 2 daggers. Not only the DpS is good but also the trap detection and lockpicking add a lot of utility to your party without having to have another rogue (I also didn't like both of the rogue characters)

I just littary finished playing over the weekend and my god you will love rogues. a duel dagger assassin / duelist is godlike.

I found the Rogue boring, but we all have opinions like that.

my longest and main playthrough was as a human noble Rogue. I love rogues and stealth classes in fantasy games and I confirmed that with this game. THis game , gameplay wise has a great rogue experience. Rogues do not have as much armor or hit points as warriors but they deliver in the damage department just fine and are really fun and cool to play. Rogue party members are terrible but playing as one makes for a well rounded group. Ive really never enjoyed a heavy armor character in any game or setting.

I had a cunning and dexterity based rogue with different specializaitons. Dagger Assassin with any other melee mix is fantasic but I also had a cunning rogue who used swords and was equally as deadly and ignored armor.
