Need for Speed: Undercover

Need for Speed: Undercover

Is it worth it?
I'm just asking, and answering, before other people do.

Short answer? No.

Long answer? GOD no.

Everything in this game is lacklustre at best, a mere shadow of the original Most Wanted (the pinacle of the series in my eyes).

The driving is awful; the cars are hard to get a feel for, handle awful, have some really wonky physics at times, and just all around feel like toys instead of cars. The customization is garbage too. Both in design (the menus are some of the most unweildy I've ever used), and in purpose (it's impossible to tweak the cars up to feel good). I'll also return to the physics: they never work in chases, as disabling cops is nearly impossible with them (damage is governmed by some alternate abstract health system). The few times you'll go airborne, it's usually because there's some unseen bump in the road.

The map design is equally terrible. The map's biggest crime is being huge, but unmemorable. This is a huge design flaw though; it's difficult to get your bearings in a car chase, because all the scenery, especially the cities, blend to gether into a blurred mess in your mind. No notable landmarks or anything. And while the map is huge, the majority of it is large, long, winding roads with no exits. This extends to the track design; many of the maps simply reuse the same sections over and over again, just reversed.

The opponent AI is invincible. It's nearly impossible to spin them out, but they have the ability to fling you sideways like a dog shaking off a bad case of fleas. At times it seems they rubberband too much as well, but I'm not the best ever at racing games, so it could be me.

The police? My god, the AI. Some of the challenges require the player to get into long, extended chases. I'm willing to grant that at times the AI needs to be given a chance to catch up at later heat levels. But I had the repeated problem, that when I stopped, THEY WOULD TURN TAIL AND RUN AWAY INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING ME. That's as big as glitches get, if you ask me, and it was nearly a gamebreaker.

Oh, and the plot is awful too. Admittedly it's an excuse plot, but this was just grating. Every few races, a cutscene will pop up where Maggie Q will berate you while strutting around being useless. Even by game standards, it's just obnoxious.

DO NOT BUY IT. Save your pocket change, and buy yourself another, better NFS game. I've tried the new Hot Pursuit, and it's not half bad.

Just got it and the first cutscene after the initial getaway drive keeps crashing the game... I don't even get to see the main menu beyond a save load selection. Highly disappointed in something I barely had any expectations for.

I've played many games in the NFS series and I have to agree that undercover is terrible compared to a lot of the others.

It's not that bad as the latest games in the franchise BUT nothing like the old n4s. Good for a low price.

If you have the old most wanted....skip this one. It is like a shell of most wanted. I don't know what they were thinking

How would you rank this, Most Wanted (2005), and Most Wanted (2012)?

Most Wanted (2005) was the best NFS game I ever played, followed closely by NFS:U and NFS:Carbon.

I haven't played Most Wanted 2012 yet, but I have ranked all the games I've played so far. There's only two that I genuinely don't like at all, and only one of them objectively so. The rest were either awesome overall (the top 3) or in some way were redeemed in my eyes by some feature (World borrowing MW's map, The Run's attempt at varied action)

Most Wanted (2005)
Hot Pursuit (1998)
Hot Pursuit 2 (2002)
The Run (2011)
NFS World (2010)
Hot Pursuit (2010)
*** From here on down, I consider these games the failures ***
Carbon (2009) (Can't put my finger on why, but I just didn't like this one.)
Undercover (2008)

I love it because, unlike many newer nfs games, YOU CAN ACTUALLY CUSTOMIZE YOUR CARS!!!! And aside from nfs games, there aren't any good racing games available on PC that allow you to do this. Like grid, dirt, etc. I mean, obviously, it's not the best looking game. But it's good fun, you have a licensed cars that you can customize to quite a degree. so for the money, if you're looking fro good racing game with a good rnage of customization options, and actual cars, get this game. I personally LOVE being able to customize your vehicle visually and in terms of performance. It adds depth to the game.

SPOILER ALERT: The story of the game is like a movie too. The way your female boss betrays you in the end and all of the other stuff. It's a pretty well made game.

So yeah. That's my 2 cents.

Some of the battles are VERY difficult to win with this A.I. I'm thinking of stopping as it has already gotten very annoying. Not only does the AI know all the time where to go (in Battle races this is extremely frustrating), but that "ability" of theirs you mentioned can make everybody pretty angry.

Having the same exact problem. I'm trying to play all of the NFS games in the order they came out. Just tackled NFS: Pro Street before this, but it was so bugged on my i7 system I finally had to bail on it, and then I installed Undercover, and I can't even get past the first intro police chase scene. Oh well, NFS: Shift, here we come.
