Game's great, music isn't.
A game about planting and cultivating the seeds of the apocalypse should not have such a sleepy - and frankly, downright boring - soundtrack. Perhaps this is a meta-commentary on the banality of evil... but I strongly suspect it has more to do with the royalty free tag on all the songs.

Anyway, there are royalty free songs out there that better fit the theme of the game - and, better yet, don't sound like an apathetic guitar student carefully plucking out the notes only after quintuple-checking that their fingering is right for fear of giving away the fact they haven't been practicing to their instructor. I know the sound only because I've been that student before.

If you're inclined to drop money for quality - and spoiler, you pretty much always will have to do that outside of just using Baroque classical music or something - try Peter Gundry. He specializes in "Dark Fantasy" music and did Dominions 5's soundtrack.

In the meantime, if you too hate the music, Dominions 5's soundtrack fits SOFG almost like a glove. You can either mute ingame sound and play it in the background on YouTube, or if you own Dominions 5, perform forbidden rites in Audacity to bring the music over to SOFG.

I dunno, I feel like the soundtrack fits the chill, laid back vibe of the gameplay, but I could see an expanded soundtrack with darker elements being nice.

I like the relaxing albeit dreary-at-times music. It sets the tone.

I actually enjoy Dominions 4 soundtrack over 5's. Still, good recommendation. Do you have others in the same vein?

When it comes to whole soundtracks, no, not off the top of my head. Some of the royalty-free tracks used in Fall from Heaven 2 would fit, though they sometimes tend toward epic and bombastic as opposed to insidious and moody.
To each their own. The game has me interested in maybe purchasing it, so I don't have it yet, but I'd rather put on some Death Metal for this game.

I actually quite enjoyed the game's soundtrack for what it is. That said, I have yet to play a strategy game where I don't end up replacing the music at some point, because I generally play these games for hours and hours and hours, so I love the recommendations here.

It's not terrible in my opinion, but you are right that Dom 4 and 5 had killer soundtracks.

There's background noise in the solo acoustic guitar track i heard that could probably be cleaned up and that's my biggest gripe with it.

But since this turning into a general "Other music to listen to while playing this game" thread, let me throw out Markus Junnikkala. His Eldritch and Preternatural albums are pretty much perfect background music for this game.

Checked out the albums you mentioned on YouTube, and WOW, these are leaps and bounds ahead of the music that's actually in the game. A perfect blend of epic orchestral tracks and mysterious, somber ambiance. It's like the fantasy equivalent of the music in Plague Inc, which this game is heavily reminiscent of in its premise.

If only there was a way to replace the in-game music with these tracks...

The music files are in advdata\music and are .ogg format. I'm not sure how the game handles music in that folder - as in does it need to be the exact filename, or will any files put there play, do they have to be .ogg or are other filetypes supported but it might be worth experimenting with if you feel like it.

Perhaps the dev can chime in too

Looks like you can replace the in-game music with whatever you want by just deleting the preexisting files in the music folder and putting in whatever .ogg files you like. I replaced them with the Markus Junnikkala tracks Little Raven recommended, and now I'm definitely playing a superior version of the game

Yeah, the music is sleep inducing. I am currently running my own music in the background.
