How to cook with cabbage?

Hi all, just got a cabbage but she just holds it or drops it, i can't store it in a chest and its not going into ingredients, so i can't cook with it, but the quest needs it? I assume the same will go for pumpkins etc. Help please.

You need to gather them using crows. Sometimes the birds lag and don't gather. If that happens try to place cursor on different cabbage/pumpkin until it's gathered. It worked for me every time. Hope it helps!
