Option to play as a male
Based on how the other threads like this go, I imagine this will turn into a cesspool too, but considering the devs seem to be acknowledging this request, I figured I'd weigh in as well.

I'd greatly like being able to make a male character in the game, considering it has a pretty solid character customization. I'd get if we were playing a set character with a distinct personality (Lara Croft, Geralt of Rivia, etc), but from what I've seen, our character doesn't seem to even speak. Maybe there's more background that gets revealed later, but from what I've seen, the PC truly is a blank slate, which seems to take away from the idea that they have to be female. I get the idea of Baba Yaga being more likely to take on a female apprentice (I've always liked Baba Yaga in folklore), but as that doesn't seem to be mentioned in-game, I don't really see that as a great reason for not having the option.

If the devs really want to keep the PC as female only, and that fits their vision, then yeah, I get that. Though it'd be appreciated by a lot of people to have the option (as seen in other threads).

Also, it's dumb that I have to say this, but I've also played The Forest and Sons of the Forest, and a constant request by people there was for people to get the option of playing as a female character. While I'd play as a male in that one either way, I always argued that it should be an option for women to get female characters too. And like what I've seen in this forum, it always turned into a cesspool, and ironically people using the same insults and accusations, albeit flipped.

Only the devs know if it's something they'd put into the game, but like I said, I figured I'd make another request. I love crafting games, enjoy Slavic lore, and specifically like Baba Yaga, so it'd be fun to make a character that fits me in a game like this (so long as it doesn't conflict with the way the devs want to take the game). Guess we'll see how the game develops.

As a woman with beaver teeth, thank you for the recognition. Howerver the llama offers a variety of advanteges. First of we produce our own wool to weave into cloths and are capable of staying warm. I get that with the beaver skin you'll be able to gather wood without leshy's approval since you'll be a creature of the woods but I would rather prefer the cute llama. :steamhappy:

Hello. I think many people would be comfortable playing for beaver. After all, not all women look like women, some look like beavers.

Lol not gonna lie, if we had the option of playing as a sentient, magic beaver, I'd pick that option every time
Are people afraid of narrative stories now adays or something? Do you go into mario wanting to be peach? How about zelda wanting to be, well, zelda? The story is about Reka, you're controlling her and being the apprentice of Baba Yaga. Why does gender have anything to do with that?

Because some people have... no... imagination. They can't _imagine_ being anything else then what they are. They can't put themselves in someone else's shoes, or roleplay.

Younger people have grown up in an incredible era of nearly flawless CGI, that creates images of any whack azz thing someone can think up. As a consequence, they have never developed their imagination. Their imaginations are flabby shriveled things, practically non-existent. It's very sad.

I can only fully immerse myself in games were the main character is a perfect white male that always succeeds in life.

James Bond games with Daniel Craig as Bond was the best games(and movies) for this reason.

The difference being that Mario, Peach, and Zelda are all actual characters, with fixed looks (albeit it changes depending on the game). In the example I had in my original post, I don't mind playing as a fixed character regardless of gender (Lara Croft, Nathan Drake, Samus, Link, etc.). It's just strange to see a game that lets you customize yourself so much omit the option of gender, unless it's stated in game why that's the case. Also, Reka doesn't at all speak, which makes her feel like even less of a core character, and more of a player self-insert. If they outright stated in game that Reka was indeed only female because it fit the story they wanted to tell, then by all means, go ahead. That not being stated though, just makes it feel like a strange omission.

I don't think this is the case, I think it's more that in this style of a game, where the PC is so strongly a player self insert, rather than a a fixed character, people like being able to make the self-insert look like them.

My favorite movie is Ratatouille, and my favorite character in the movie is Remy. I find the literal rat relatable, so at least for me, it's not a case of not being able to relate to a female character, it's just a preference thing in a game with so much character customization.
I think people are ignoring, or maybe haven't realised, that Reka is a girls name. Are you expecting them to change the name of the entire game?

That's a good point actually. Reka isn't a common name where I live (had never heard it until this game), so I didn't have the context of that.

Yet everyone has already accepted that her name is Reka. Why is no one complaining that they can't rename the character?

Release the hounds! let the complaining begin!

Of all the requests here, adding male characters is the least important. Male is just one of several genders, and there's already the female gender implemented in the game. So that's almost done.

Yet are there llamas or magic beavers? no! NOT at all. Those requests are completely ignored. So those should be more important.

Oh insane,

quite, quite, quite mad.

But think about it... a llama character could have special skills. I already mentioned the idea of being able to wear two leg outfits (front and back legs). And they could have llama eyelash magic.

Players could rhythmically tap a certain button to flutter the llamas eyelashes, filling a circular gauge. When it reaches max, they release a radial burst of magic with various effects. Like the quest where you have to find the lost baby goat, a burst of eyelash magic would cause the baby goat to FIND us! It would dance around our llama witch adoring how beautiful it's eyelashes are. Then we'd just lead it back to the goat farmer.
and then we need male clothes? But male clothes are boring, that's why everyone wants to be a woman so they can have a larger wardrobe and 200 pairs of shoes.

I cant remember if it was this thread or another but someone did state that Reka is also a title and not just a name meaning "river" which is a big preface of the game as we follow the river and how a river flows can either be good or bad etc.

Its sad that my original comment agrees with you. I have totally diffrent reasons but you are right. Except the shoe part I dont care about that, as I said before I want to dress her up. And male cloth are most of the time just bad. Hogwarts did a good job with that, but in most other games you have the choice between black hoddie or black t-shirt if it is about male charakters.
