I am well and truly stumped as to how to get the item Alex is asking for in this mission, I've tried sleeping pills but nothing happens during the time period I have access to the Guard room, please help ^^'

Hi, I assume you're talking about retrieving the Gas Mask from the Staff Block. Here's the procedure on how to retrieve it:

But first I have to mention: You will not be able to retrieve the Gas Mask from the Staff Block during the day. It is located in the upstairs of the Staff Block with Kenny and Vasily patrolling during the day, so you will have to get it at night.

First, you need access to the sewer and complete the 'River Conqueror' quest -- build a bridge to the other side of the sewer on the right -- to get access to the 2 passages just across.

The first passage leads to the Inmate Property Storeroom and the Operating Room. You need to go to the second passage near the collapsed iron frame to get access to the Staff Block at night.

Upon your first arrival, you will not be able to climb through the drain, because a cluttered shelf will be blocking your way. After identifying the location of the drain as the cleaning room in the Staff Block, you will have to return to the Staff Block the next day and move the shelf out of the way -- it will be easier to move if you get rid of the clutter first.

To be able to enter the cleaning room, you will have to sweep at least one part of the room with the mop and then choose the option to 'Clean the Dirty Mop' after you're done. While the mop is being rinsed, you will have 15 minutes to move the shelf or remove the clutter from the shelf -- you will require Strength 10 to move shelf, so I would suggest removing the clutter to make it easier to move.

After the shelf has been moved, you will have access to the Staff Block through the sewer.

Once you get to the Staff Block at night, you will have to go upstairs and head to the south-east part of the building, where you will find a fenced off area. The door is protected by an anti-theft lock, meaning you will have to bring some lockpicks and learn the agility specialty which allows you to pick anti-theft locks.

Once you enter the area, you will find a Gas Mask hanging from the wire fence. But because it is in such a conspicuous place, Thomas might be worried about the guards realizing it is missing, so he will put it in a nearby cart to see if the guards care about the mask or not -- meaning you will have to come back tomorrow night.

Once you come back tomorrow, you will be able to retrieve the gas mask from the cart and hand it to Alex the next day.

Last thing: If you don't have the option to move the shelf or remove the clutter from the shelf in the cleaning room, you must first attempt to enter the Staff Block through the sewer at night. Only after identifying the location of the drain to be the cleaning room in the Staff Block will you be able to move the shelf or remove the clutter.

Assuming you have access to the long passage leading to the Staff Block, it will take you about 5 in-game days to complete the quest and hand the mask to Alex. It's a lot of work so I wish you the best of luck!
