you can save scum through him if you want, but keep in mind that there are 2 "dodges" in the game : your accuracy isn't 100% so either you miss or they dodge but they are regrouped in the dodge etiquette.
Also he let you off the hook if you put down to half hp (so he's rigging it against himself).
But thomas start with 3 (or 4) in str and his specie is far from being the strongest at fighting (low base hp), and no training at all.
by late game you can one or 2 shot any opponent in the game, but start really weak.
so everything but war correspondent has zero chance in winning. good to know... fine ill lose now and take my rage out on small children with the minigun in Blood dragon.
dmg calculation : you have 3 str so +3 base dmg leading to dmg = 6-8 +3
with alcool you gain a flat +4 leading to 6-8+7 and the fight becomes WAY easier.
Of course you need to befriend the good person for that (maybe there is some alcool in the cabinet of beth along with the gloves, I'm not sure)
Its like rocky, you lost first, do training montage and then stomp that lizard flat on your heel.
Using only Unarmed Attack, 4-5 Bleed, 2 Criticals, 2-3 Dodges, and 1 Rest were enough to get him down to half without any item buffs for me.
Crunchy hit one Sand Throw, but if you lockpick the left cabinet upstairs during the morning you can get the Myopia Glasses for an extra 5% hit chance.
Also, he won't attack you on the second week if you are 50~ rapport with him. So if you rush your rep up and give him some gifts before next monday he won't touch you.
"I'm just getting started and you're already down? ...Pathetic."
After the 'real' fight though it does the standard search or run bit, and Crunchy hates you from then on (like I care as he started it) but you get a bunch of fame out of winning. You can reconcile by paying him if you want his friendship but if I was going to pay him, I would have just skipped the fight.
You want to fight him though, because it's his bond barrier ^^
