In most cases Loverboy outclasses every other weapon and never runs out of ammo. Elevates the combat on its own. Other than that, you have the Stinger with the best single target damage, Lance which is excellent for the two most dangerous and annoying enemies, Ion Bow's charge attack is useful and finally the Bowling Bombs, whenever they behave and don't freak out, like 2/3 times. Also the blast radius of the explosions is rather small and doesn't really match the visuals.
It's not like I never used the rest, or that they don't work well enough necessarily, but I found the vast majority of encounters are dealt with more efficiently without them, and you come out in much better shape. For example the Foam is great for 2-3 levels in the game and that's it, the Plasma Cannon can suck it and did we really need Assault, Uzi plus default Photon?
The Assault's single upgrade is redundant to say the least, and no one will ever use one Uzi, so their sole upgrade could had been the default. Not to mention that is reverts to using only one every time there is a loading screen and dual wield usually refuses to activate until you fire a bullet. The default Photon Repeater is a worse assault, since it functions the same way and the projectiles are much slower. Those could have been condensed to one weapon with 2 upgrades and have a separate railgun bound to a different key.
Mostly used this spitter weapon at the end, you can kill enemies with it without leaving your cover.
Not solely damaged by those weapons, but have them be much more effective. Not to mention they let you recharge the Can Opener only when they want you to cut a door open, which is like 4 times in the whole game.
They all felt useful and all the upgrades were great fun to use.
What i love is that the game is giving you options and freedom in how you play. Every choice works and feels satisfying. I could clear entire rooms with the bowling bombs, i could launch the bile spitter at crowds and sit back and do nothing or i could whip out my flaming smg and dance around the emeies while they burn to a crisp. I can blind them with my upgraded shotgun then take off their heads or line up multiple headshots with the Loverboy's alt fire.
It makes replaying encounters so much more fun as well.
I know that there are some who will basically just stick with one weapon - that is their choice but also their loss. The game has given you one of the most incredible arsenals and every single gun in there is viable and fun.
Other than that, I am enjoying the game.
