The big bold evil guy, is screaming that he is wanna kill all people in the world, he is corporate. The colonel Is wakes us up and tellin u to save everyone. Recolour blue GDF soldiers into, idk, red BAD EVIL ORGANISATION or smth, tell by colonel, "Oh shelly, we gotta abtain demon core fast, or he gonna get it!" And then he snitched it from u in almost the same sequnce, jail us and build the bomb. We coming back from underground prison, the colonel is crying with joy from knowing that we are alive. U see gdf soldiers and BEO soldiers shooting on the street (just like cops vs GDF), and then u kill the bold guy and save the day. Is that THAT hard?
No i don't, read my second message, i want just a functional story, even the most possible simple one. The current one is just god awful.
I didn't play graven, but from the thing i heard, it's suffers from same problems, yet Phantom Fury got scenes and diaoluges that makin it story even worse.
Writing here is some of the worst I have ever layd my eyes and ears upon.
There is absolutely no excuse for this level of horrid writing.
- The very first scene: there's a mole in the GDF so you start killing GDF employees at random... Why? That's not how a mole work, a mole is supposed to by a covert agent. How murdering low level members of the GDF will accomplish anything?
- When you get the demon core: OK, the narration is very adamant that you need the suit to handle the demon core. Fine, that's a good plot device... but as soon as you get the demon core a random goon just handle it without issue... what?
- when the girl betrays you: I didn't understand what she tried to say.
- why does the GDF has fanatics of the Heskel cult in full cult getup in its ranks?
- where's Heskel
What the should have done:
- They should have made the colonel a bad guy from the start. the twist makes no sense.
- The story with grandpa bombshell is amazing 90's action camp. Make it the reason Shelly is invested in retrieving the demon core from the evil colonel
- Shelly's guilt about her past failure with that bomb is a good idea. The colonel taunting her with that memory would have worked well if he was set up as a bad guy from the start. Shelly having to face the same bomb she had when she lost everything is a great action movie plot climax (it should have been the end, not the fake end followed by a lame boss battle against a random character).
- the ending should have been set in a space station
That would explain a lot
It need some screaming Heskel fanatic leader.
We should actually fight Fanatics army together with GDF. Maybe have GDF vs GDF, until General betrayal and then go agains traitor GDF army, and mutants mixed here and there.
Also story must have bein more in the center of happening, instead it always feels like s**t already happened and we just arrived. That specially fellt at city, we don't see explotion, we don't see civilians runnin in panic, its all already happened before our arrival and thats dissapointment, i was surprised to see policeman fight GDF, atleast some world building.
Hot take: the story in Half Life isn't that good. It's very cinematic, which people confuse for story, but the story isn't particularly good. It also has good lore but that's also not story. I love Half Life to death but not because of its story. Things do admittedly get better in the sequel though.
Half Life was important because it revolutionized how we told stories in games. But it did not have a good story. It was just marginally better than you'd find in other games at the time.
