Like if you pit the two Killing Times back to back the PC versions levels are undoubtedly much better. While the 3DOs are very corridor shootery... if you know what I mean? But it still would have been cool to have the option to play the levels. Ya had all the assets didn't ya? Just leave the stuff you didn't have time to upscale untouched and call it a "Special Feature"
Like how in the Quake Remaster you can play Quake 64. With its micro sized levels, and dumbed down AI intact.
And it looks like they did add in some things from 3DO into the game, such as the zombie ducks.
That tracks with the interview I was watching on Nightdive's youtube channel with one of their artists leading up the project. Where he was practically gitty (or as gitty as any tech worker would allow themself to be) at the fact they had pretty much all the original uncompressed assets from the 3DO port.
However, not to add another layer of confusion. During the interview he mentioned that because they didn't have the assets for the PC characters, they were redesigning them from the ground up and re-rendering them.
Maybe he mispoke, and was taking about the 3DO characters? Cause some of them have definitely had a glow up. Or maybe that didn't make the release and is might get patched in, cause the PC models definitely haven't been redone? It is strange that the key art on the library in the store page depict the PC clown model. When the 3DO model is on by default.
I agree, but its always dissapointing to see content missing that could have easily been there. The original maps were not good at all. But what they were was a perfect example of a mediocre maze shooter. Like Aliens Trilogy. The kind of stuff that era of 3D gaming was known and reviled for.
Definitely not something that you could sell a remaster on. But it could be something you load into from the special features menu, to show your kids why being called a "DOOM Clone" was at one point a pejorative. Not having it at all feels kind of like cultural revisionism lol.
In contrast, the PC version presents a more realistic environment, whereas the 3DO version embraced a whimsical, dream-like quality that contributed to its charm. The music complemented the labyrinthine house mazes more effectively than in the outdoor areas.
Despite the reduction in house size, the decision to include additional explorable locations is commendable. It would have been advantageous to incorporate the 3DO levels as an optional mod, enhancing the overall experience. Nevertheless, this remaster is highly impressive.
It would be a neat little update to put in the extras menu. But at this point I don't even really trust anything Nightdive actually says until it's done. What happened to VR in System Shock 2 enhanced Huh?!? For that matter what happened to System Shock 2 Enhanced?!?
I'm still waiting for sin reloaded and the thing. But props to night drive for remastering any game honestly, i hope they continue to do hundreds of more games. System shock 2 yea that too, i also want to see Sin episodes remastered.
Hell, i want to see a remastered port of Blue Stinger from the sega dreamcast :)
