To be fair, Fatal Frame series is not really well known for puzzles compared to Silent Hill or Resident Evil. Indeed in previous games you have Pinwheel and Sliding Stones alike, but again only a very few and the variety won't go further than that. Otherwise most of the time, you will follow apparitions, past flashes to trace the locations, taking photos on designated spots to reveal key items to unlock main goal doors, and slap backtracking on top of that because next time it's something else close, ooh mysteriously mysterious you not expecting that huh? - which is the traditional formula of the game.
That being said, chapter 6 is also the turning point of this game, where the pacing will ramp up - getting to new locations, facing new threats often, increased plot progression.
So I can expect more of these "find the spot in the picture" things, huh... I mean, it's okay when it's "clear" of what I have to look for, but right now, one of those 3 pics is literally a window ._. A SINGLE WINDOW IN A WHOLE MANSION/TEMPLE ;-;
Yes, but it won't actually be that tedious because there is Camera Light indicator, that will glow brighter whenever you reaching closer to the target, or sometimes having ghosts showing i.e you are on the right path too, and as long as you make sure to give every room a look, you can't miss.
Alright, managed to finish drop 6. Had to look up on the internet for the window picture one lol. And found out that even 10 years ago, people disliked this passage of the game very much!
Yes FF5 is always considered to be black sheep of the series by fans, considering it removed free exploration, save points, turned into mission-ish with cash shop and short, with lackluster characters, selling fanservice with wet stuffs than doing horror so if you were to say it's the worst, no surprise there.
For me personally, after playing all games, after long hours running back n forth in FF2 village, giant aah manor in 1, 3 and 4, I'm totally fine with 5.
It's still a Fatal Frame game at core, the atmospheric is still phenomenal - the drop 5 video, the ambiance, sounds and visuals of environment level hold up very well, hell for me it aesthetically looks much better than SH2 Remake at times

The gameplay is still the best considering you have dedicated dodge which is useful in tight room or corners compared to past game, and you need to put efforts in camera angles to capture stuffs rather than just rotating left right from past game, and this enable more aggressive ghost fights too. And I for once appreciated the experience becomes more linear, on a smaller area so that you can focus on the goals and no longer wander around, having to fight that aah woman in the Mirror room for every effing time in FF3 (yeah, it's painful than finding a window in this game). One more thing, getting wet, it does make sense in the game story wise.
Anyway, if there is a chance for FF6, FF5 is the solid base for it, and devs just need to put back free exploration & save points, have better characters and plot interactions, and new creative ways to interact with everything than Hold A button to touch, puzzles included, then we're so back.
Yeah, it is boobies-galore in this game lol. I'm glad I kept playing, just finished the drop were Hojo was keeping watch so that all the girls stayed safe at home, and failed successfully at his one task :').
When I'm done with this one, I'll probably get Fatal Frame 4 remaster. I hesitated playing that one first, as the original came first, but the remaster came after 5, but decided to play in "remaster release" order!
One thing I'm maybe less fond of in Fatal Frame 5 is the amount of fights? I mean, I fought more ghosts in that flooded cemetary than in the entirety of Fatal Frame 1 .-.
That's actually the correct way to play the series in my opinion, in this modern day, since 5 and 4 happened at entirely separate areas and times, you don't have to worry about the timeline or relations with the other games much. Pretty much both of them are their own things, minus one character that fans got upset about in 5
So 5 is kinda a quick entry to see if you are interested in the series, and you get to start from the lowest point. Then go upward with 4 where you get free exploration & save points back, and peak with 1-2-3 original classic trilogy, where true terror waiting.
Yea I agree, at first it was to show you the ramp up difficulty but later it just becomes farming spot for Points, for those wanting S rank of the said Drop, well I'm one of them lol.
