Can you beat Bion?

Help an old perfectionist here. Can you beat the dude or is your defeat scripted? Cheers.

Scripted, fought him in NG+ and you can't defeat him.

He CANNOT be literally "killed" because he's a main NPC, BUT you can fight until his health bar goes to ZERO, soon after that the scripted lighting strikes you and cutscene happens. This is CONSIDERED as him being defeated, and later if you talk with him in the Shelter, he will reward you a great-for-early-game but random item

And you can zero-hp him in the first playthrough, even in Challenge mode. I did it. Just I had to grind level to 10, put all the points to ATK, and of course failed several times to understand his movesets. I used staff + shield&sword.
