Is this game actually a Souls-like?
I usually buy all souls-like games since that's my favorite genre. But some games get tagged this just because they think it's "hard" while not actually playing anything at all like a souls game. So does this game mechanically play like one? "Bonfires", losing progress when you die, vague lore/story reveals scattered around the environments, etc? Looking at a few videos it doesn't really seem that way.

well, the bosses can be tough i guess? If you don't dodge/parry in time your screwed quickly. I only played the demo and the trashmobs werent much of a challenge. There are Bonfires, they even work the same (kinda). you "rest" at them and monster respawn again. Only difference is, that you don't level up there nor do you refill potions with it. Its more like an RPG where you level up after gaining enough exp from killing stuff.

Also yeah, there are snipeds of lore scattering around.

But... why dont you jsut play the demo? It already shows a bit of what the game will be?

Thanks for the details. I was mainly asking just for feedback from people that played the full game. I will try the demo when I can though; from what you said it sounds alright so I'll give it a shot.

but on consoles for almost 3 days... and some streamers even could play earlier than that xD
However i disagree on one point... a Soulslike doesn't need to have a Vague Story / scattered lore. It's an element which can emphasize on Soulslike, but it's not a must for it. Fallen Order was pretty Story-Heavy and also felt for the most part like a Soulslike Game... (and the "most part" doesn't come from the fact it's pretty story heavy, but rather from the uncharted / prince of persia stuff added into it)

And yes this game is pretty soulslike.

no it isn't a souls like. its an action rpg.

these days people put souls-like on everything as soon as it has a dodge roll mechanic or a checkpoint system similar to bonfires. people who do that automatically lose their right to partake in the discussion. they clearly have no idea what a souls game is actually about. we already have to deal with people throwing all kinds of games in the rpg genre as is as soon as it has an attribute system or loot. let's not dilute it even more than is already the case.

Yeah death doesnt lead into an xp loss and the first boss you just walk next to him and into him to avoid any of his attacks.

From what I've seen, it's nothing like Souls-Likes. It more closely resembles Kingdoms of Amalur, or Fenyx.

I couldn't put my finger on what game this reminded me of after seeing the gameplay, but this was it. That's exactly what I was thinking when I first saw it but couldn't remember the name of the game.

It is a souls-inspired game, yes. Slower combat, stamina management, enemies respawning at checkpoints. But it also has a traditional leveling system and you don't seem to be losing progress (xp) upon death.

Since when was vague storytelling a souls-like feature? Thats how every single From Software game has always been. Evergrace, Ninja Blade and The Tenchu games, etc. had vague stories.

None these things, except enemy respawning are new. Dark Souls popularized it, but just because it has these elements, doesn't mean it's souls-like.

The combat is not even that slow, you get to freely do combos at anytime you wish. You don't have to wait for openings. It's just an action RPG.

Just because those games had them doesn't mean that literally every souls games fromsoftware made didn't have it as an integral part of their storytelling that all came together with the rest of the game's world. Which was a major selling point for me; piecing together the lore/story is fun for me, but only part of it.

I played the demo and I guess the bosses and "bonfires" are inspired by Dark Souls (re-spawning enemies, move sets to learn of in order to beat the boss (although I beat every boss first try and I never beat any Dark Soul 1 boss)), but everything else like the linear level design and standard enemies, who are really easy to beat, goes right in the direction of regular action adventure with RPG elements.
