Why is the voice quality so damn bad?
I'm new to the Klonoa series and wanted to support it by buying this collection. Started the 1st game and I like what I'm playing so far but... why is the gibberish sounds like it went through a low-pass filter 42 times?

I decided to check some YT footage of the old Wii remake this game was based on with the gibberish set to ON and.... it sounds crystal clear there. idk... it just REALLY takes me out of the experience when I hear perfectly HQ in-game grunts coupled with these muffled SNES-sounding voice clips in the cutscenes

It's because of the original sound files coming from a PS1 game, which were compressed to fit a disc (probably).

They aimed at being as true as possible to the original game with both art direction and sound, therefore the "bad" audio.

The Wii version is not the same as the original, because it was re-recorded with completely different lines.

Maybe a similar issue with licensing / voice acting, that affected Silent Hill HD Collection, where they didn't wanna pay the original VA's and re-recorded both SH2 and SH3....
But here, it's the opposite. Maybe they fully own the original voice lines and didn't wanna pay up for the newer ones?

I don't know.
I wouldn't have mind to have the Phantomile Wii voice acting in the game (I don't care one bit for the horrible english version though...).
But yeah, it's kinda strange that they didn't keep the Wii-voices alongside the classic PS1.

The reason KPRS uses the original PS1 voices over the Wii gibberish is because they chose to follow the original game's script over the revised, widely-disliked Wii script.

Because they don't follow the same scripts, the Wii voices wouldn't work at all since they would be missing sound clips. (Like how in the Wii version, a large portion of Klonoa's lines were given to Huepow instead.)

Hopefully I explained this clear enough, kinda sleepy lol.

Presumably the uncompressed pre PS1 lines are lost to time, Japanese studios are notoriously bad at archival.

Nothing about the audio in this has been changed from the originals on PS1 and PS2, the reason PS1 sounds as bad as it is because the PS1 version was recorded like this originally on that version so the audio is the original here. I only wish for a mod now that can actually record these in English with better voice actors, faithful to the subtitle lines given. I know its controversial to ask for that in the case of these games, but would make it more accessible to people that wants to listen to it in English as well. And a better Japanese voice recording as well.

Because this is a soulless cashgrab from Bandai that focuses on nostalgic players like me that paid 50€ anyway just because it's Klonoa.
They did the bare minimum with the new graphics, keeping the original soundtrack and not even changing the original ps1 compressed files.
I don't mind that for me, but I know these were 50€ basically tossed in the trash can.

It's reusing the sound from the PS1 version and they likely don't have the original clearer recordings. The Wii audio is different lines, even though it's a made-up gibberish language. There's still issues and old fans do have gripes. And if you're a new player, I also want to say THANK YOU for supporting this series and I hope you have the best of times.

The Wii version changed the script, so not all of the newer voice lines would match up with the original text.

The first game uses the original voice files from the PS1 game. Originally when the Wii remake came out in 2008 they redid the voices with english and japanese instead of the made up Phantomile language. Klonoa 2 has clear voice files since it's a PS2 game originally

As far as the graphics, gameplay, etc. goes, it's based off the Wii remake, but all the dialogue (and resulting audio) and character designs is based off the PS1 original.
