How do bonfires work?

I don't understand how fire works.
There's a guide about fire, but it's about functions and variable and I want to understand more fundamentally.
For example, what happens when I add fire to a bonfire that's already burning? And what happens to a bonfire when I take a fire from it?

Technically, the bonfire operates on a queue system. When you add fire, it is placed at the end of the queue.

The bonfire selects the first item in the queue and burns it for a specific duration (I don't recall the exact time). During this burning phase, you can freely collect any subsequent items from the bonfire.

Once it has finished burning an item, if the queue isn't empty, it picks up the next item.
