After the tile gets depleted, you only need 1 bot per tile to keep it in check, but I leave both of them anyway, as waiting doesn't waste their batteries.
I have just started and am getting to the sulfur spring and I am already (afraid) of thorns... Maybe they can be put together into branches, for example - and branches into logs - quite in the spirit of the game itself.
And btw heaters stop working while overgrown by thorns, so you have to fight against thorns AND ice. This system needs a rework.
My solution is to ignore the thorns and choose a path free of thorns.
My solution:
1. Automate bot building, limit it at 5-10 bots (you won't need more at a time)
2. For each thorn tile, put 2 bots and have them pick thorns, then wait if the tile is empty.
3. Put furnaces, and/or the higher one (and you might instead need the one that warms stuff in a line) and put 1 dedicated bot to refuel per furnace.
This way, there's no way the thorns on those particular tiles will ever grow back. However, this simply means removing thorns in a line to get to the volcano. Though it can work for all thorn tiles (the bots per tile will hardly spend any energy once they're done emptying the tile) it's extremely silly to manage, and the thorns will end up regrowing.
However, I think they're working on burner bots and stuff, that you will probably be able to use for thorns? I just hope the volcano isn't used solely for this, and gives us some infinite resource or some thing we can grow there?
