Breaking bigger rocks, makes small rocks eventually, after a lot of Pickaxe hitting. With a Pickaxe, you'll be swimming in little stones...

First rock in the first room in the cave
Second rock is next to the fire outside

From what I can remember, I haven't played the Steam Demo for a while...
