Inventory, and crafting and tutorial
I am struggling to understand the mechanics involved to find resources and to craft items. Either I am very dense (I don't think so), or the tutorial in the demo is not helping.
I worked through the "tutorial", where large signs are posted with hints, but apparently are not enough information to know what to do.

"Orange circle shows how full your stomach is". What orange circle? I don't see that, even if I click on or hold Q.

"Find the stone", "Find the stick". I could not find anything labelled "stick", and I found only one "stone". The stone did not fall into inventory, but was held in the hands, preventing any other action or activity until dropped. And holding the stone did not satisfy "Find the stone".

"Cut the bush, and then cut a long branch to make a branch". I can't cut the bush. I assume that I need the axe to do that, but can't make an axe without 2 small stones, of which I find none after over an hour of searching the tutorial area. I can't find any branches, either, also required to craft the axe.

"Wait for the bucket to be filled with water". What bucket? I don't see any bucket anywhere.

"Open the book, click on the food icon...". What book?

The signs "explaining" the use of weapons, magazine, chamber, cartridge is not helping at all. I tried dragging as instructed (unless I am completed not understanding what "dragging the required number of cartridges..." means). Tapping or holding "R" does not make the Makarov PM able to fire shots.

I gave up after well over an hour trying to understand these things, and went to bed for the night.

I came back in the morning and started the tutorial again. This time I found "branches" and "small stones" which satisfied the "Find the stone" and Find the stick" requirements. So "Stick" means "Branch", and "Stone" means "Small stone". Got it.
So I am able to craft an axe and cut a bush. That results in "Plant Fibers", "Long Branch" and "Branch". However, as per the instructions to "Cut the bush, and then cut a long branch to make a branch...", that does not happen; instead the branches are gathered along with long branches simply by chopping a bush with the axe.

After an hour of searching the area, I found only one more "Small stone", so I am not able to craft a "stone pickaxe". And, once again I found a "Stone" which I can only carry while other actions are disabled until I drop it.

Apparently there is no pencil in the tutorial. If there is, it is very well hidden.

Well, I have had enough of this for now, time for breakfast before I can spend any more time with it.

I finally found some information after lots of time screwing around.
The objective "Find the stone" should say "Find the Small Stone. Finally got that; "Stone" is a different resource item than "Small Stone".
"Find the stick" should say "Find the branch"... got that. So, "Branch", not "Stick".
The instructions on the tutorial panels about harvesting from trees and bushes do not work as described. Can't get branches from long branches or long branches from logs and other such discrepancies.
I think that "Wait for the bucket to fill..." is about the "Water Collector", which I can't get to work anyway. When I have the materials to craft it, it places a ghost image of the water collector on the ground, but apparently does not complete the crafting. It is prompting for the branches and cloth, but I can't find how to actually craft it after that. So all I have is that ghost image of the water collector that doesn't do anything.
Same thing with the "Small Fire" as for the Water Collector: all I get is the ghost image of the fire but can't actually craft the darn thing.
OK, "Book" refers to pressing "B" for that menu.
I neglected to mention before that after I craft the stone axe, the objective in the book is still listed as not completed.
Still can't find more stones to craft the "Pick Axe".
Finally found how to get the pistol to fire rounds.
Still can't find a pencil, so can't learn any more crafting items.
I die from cold before I can' proceed any further.

I know this game is far from complete, but it should have been tweaked a tiny bit more before actually releasing the demo. As is stands, it is a frustrating mess that does demonstrate some of the mechanics of the game, but kinda needs more to be useful.
Removing the game for now, Maybe I'll check back in a few months to see if anything has been fixed.

Look at the water collector ghost image (or any other build item) and press F... any materials you are carrying that are used for it will be put in it. You can carry more than one long branch at a time.

Craft a pickaxe before a stone axe and you can make more small stones.

take the mag out of the pistol, drag the bullets onto the mag, put mag back in pistol and either drag another bullet onto pistol or press R to ♥♥♥♥ it.

Thank you for these items of information.
I experimented with combinations of click on this or that, drag something to somewhere, press this or that key, but never came across what worked. If I was a firearm user, I could see how the reload sequence makes sense. I am not a firearm user, but I did finally figure that one out, as I mentioned in my OP.
I guess this game should be tagged as a puzzle game, since it seems that we have to solve puzzles of how to operate things.
So, thank you @lemmac1 for the help. I will take another look at the water collector.

Now I am scratching my head over an award for this post that I received from "members of the Steam community".
The award is "Hilarious: There's funny, and then there's this absolute gem."
I don't see what is funny about my questions and comments. Am I being laughed at because I am looking for help with something? Did I miss unintended humor in something I said? I don't understand.
If gamers can't feel comfortable about asking for assistance, are belittled by the community for lack of experience or skills or whatever, then that community needs to step back and try again.

I don't know where to find a pencil, or anything like that, the tutorial does not walk you through things at all in a smooth manner, I was able to make some things, I am at the car trunk with the gun, but it tells me to fix my clothing, I can't fix the clothing because I don't have a sewing kit, I can't learn to make the sewing kit because no pencil..

Check the glove compartment of a car to find a pencil.

I was alright finding the items because most of them were either near the totem or from another message that tells you to craft the stone axe then chop bushes, all of that was ok chopping different bushes until I got the right materials, also the orange ring is on the watch face around the icons for water food etc.

Everything was ok until it told me to use the water collector and I built it then the water bottle never seemed to fill and the character can't drink from the collector with her hands, I might be able to drink when the bottle is placed in the drop icon in the water collector but due to being in god mode for the tutorial I see no difference in the water level and it's unclear if the yellow bar in the water collector menu is going down and filling up because I'm drinking it or because I'm adding and removing the bottle and pressing drink, she says something in subtitles when you can't drink but not when you do.

also when I got to the repair clothing part it says to take and study the bone needles to get the sewing kit blueprint but you don't start with or find a pencil to make a blueprint with, I see someone saying to take that from the car but I only saw a car after the clothing repair tutorial, also when taking the clothes off to repair them I don't know where they went and don't know if everything in your pockets disappears or not if it's the regular inventory button or somewhere else. I'm going to check again now looking for a pencil in the car.
Hairyplastic Sep 5, 2024 @ 2:20pm
Yeah I read it again it's hold tab to get the backpack so all the clothes go in there when unequipped
Still didn't find a pencil, checked every part of that car I could find for so long a bird laid another egg in the engine
Used a lockpick to open the glove compartment and there was some rifle bullets and a chocolate bar in there, didn't see a pencil the whole tutorial area, should probably make those easier to get, especially in the tutorial.

Yeah, some of the signs in the tutorial are worded a bit funny. They don't really give you any help figuring out HOW to do what they're telling you to do. Hopefully by the time the game is released, the wording in the tutorial can be straightened out and some UI changes made.

In particular, I would suggest adding the indicator to press the "F" key to the popup that appears when you are looking at the "ghost image' of something you are building. It does indicate that you can press Del to dismiss it, so it seems like this would be the best place to put it. The fist icon does appear, but normally this means you need to mouse click on it.

I came here myself to try and work through that water collector puzzle. Here's some of the things I found for later visitors that are looking for help:

Before you start, go to Options and familiarize yourself with the keybinds. Takes a lot of the guiesswork out of it.

You break up Long Branches and Stones into Branches and Small Stones by chopping them up with the Axe and Pickaxe respectively. Since you must drop them on the ground before breaking them up, you want to press Ctrl to crouch. You can then chop them up to your heart's content.

When I chopped up my first Long Branches I placed them on one of those square pads that are placed in front of the signs. It looked like a good surface for chopping up the wood. The first armload I chopped up produced a pile or three stones. I suppose I could have hit a Stone that I didn't notice was sitting there and smashed it. Either way, that was how I was able to make the Pickaxe.

Long Branches, Stones, Logs and probably Split Logs all have to be carried in your arms. You can't carry anything else, craft, or adjust your inventory while your arms are full. I didn't mess around with Logs anymore once I realized they couldn't be turned into Branches, so I never found out if they can be broken down any smaller than Split Logs.

Your Inventory is used to craft anything you can bring along with you, the book is used to craft everything else. It isn't immediately obvious that there are two crafting systems. (Although in retrospect that should have been obvious. Most Survival Games have a separate interface for placing structures)

The bottle has to be placed in the water collector by dragging it over the water drop icon. The blue bar under the bottle indicates it is full. I believe you can drink from the collector after that point, even though there doesn't seem to be doing anything. There is a gulping noise.

I was never able to fire the pistol, but I think that's because I can't press the right and left mouse buttons at the same time on my mousepad. I wasn't able to fire the bow either. I never found the pencil, I suspect it's only available in the main game, not the tutorial.

I will admit that Survival Games tend to not give you much instruction on how to play the game. Figuring out the UI appears to be part of the game. Still, the UI should give you basic guidance as to which keys to use.

Oh, and the icon with two arrows going in the opposite direction is Tab. I assume some people know that, but I personally had never seen it before.

Your experience sounds like an epic tale of survival... against the *tutorial* itself. It seems like the real challenge isn't crafting an axe but crafting a basic understanding of what on Earth is going on.

"Orange circle shows how full your stomach is"—ah yes, the infamous invisible orange circle. Clearly, it's the most stealthy UI element ever designed, a true test of your imagination. Perhaps it’s like a mystical force that only reveals itself to the worthy, or maybe it’s just a bug. Who knows?

"Find the stick" and "Find the stone." Simple enough, right? Except, plot twist: sticks are branches, and stones are *small stones.* Makes total sense—it's like playing a word association game while fending off starvation. And of course, once you find the holy grail of stones, it clings to your hand like it’s your new best friend, preventing you from doing literally anything else. Talk about dedication.

"Cut the bush, then cut a long branch to make a branch." Sounds straightforward. Except instead of crafting a branch from a branch, you just collect a bunch of random twigs like you’re building the world’s worst bird’s nest. The mystery deepens.

And the bucket? Ah, yes. The legendary bucket that probably exists in an alternate universe or requires a secret code to summon. The game should come with a map to find it or at least a treasure hunt mechanic.

The gun tutorial: It’s like they’ve decided to explain it with a series of cryptic riddles. "Drag the required number of cartridges"—what does that even mean? Are you supposed to telepathically load the gun? Maybe by day 12 of the tutorial, you’ll gain that power.

You finally cracked the "stick" and "stone" code by daybreak, which is probably a testament to your patience and detective skills. But after spending hours searching for small stones like they’re rare diamonds, it’s clear the *real* survival element here is against the tutorial itself.

Good luck with breakfast—*hopefully* your food tutorial won’t involve invisible circles or hidden stones.

Yeah this game has one of the worst tutorials I've ever experienced, but it's an early demo so I guess I'm somewhat understanding. Ngl, I assumed English wasn't the dev's first language as a way to explain the wacky instructions, but I'm not too sure of that.
