My game didn't save

I was at the part where you enter statues and then left the game to play the next day thinking that it auto saves. When I went to play today I clicked load game and it put me at the beginning of the game. Whenever I try to load to last checkpoint it puts me at the beginning of the game. Is there anyway to get where I was before?

This happened to my son, only it was after he accidentally fell or did something to die, instead of restarting him at his last checkpoint, it completely took him back to the start of the game losing all progress. Which really sucks as Wack a Wuggy was a pain to complete for us.
