Build Help Request
Just managed to beat Khazan and decided to play this for some light relief. And boy was I wrong! 😂

Have tried most classes and the only one I’ve had any success was the Nightshade (I’m only at the caretaker boss stage) been reading that the magic builds are the ones to go for but have been finding them too fragile and too dependent on mana potions.

Magic users get much better scaling and equipment later on. Still fragile, unless you multiclass into vanguard, but enough firepower to blow away most bosses in matter of seconds.

I'd say that nightshade is more fun to play, though. Unless you go poison build, then it just sucks.

Thanks Unclelstvan - would you please be able to provide me with an outline of a magic build able to withstand the early game and not too much of a "glass cannon"?
Vanguard - sword and board variant has the easiest early game IMO. No mana issues and tanks damage. Use tower shield and forget about blocking, just roll. You only want the added armor. Treat bleed as a bonus, don't build around it. Notable talents are eternal rage, veteran, enhanced endurance, armor breaker, iron will & versatility. From the Flameweaver tree: warrior's might and burning blood. First tower shield is from those fat thugs.

Flameweaver - can be caster or melee. Melee plays like a vanguard without the skills, quite boring. It's there in concept but is a failure in execution. Caster variant is pretty straightforward, you can use fire bolt throughout the game. Notable talents are elemental efficiency, focalized mana, heating up, spell penetration, phoenix. From spellbinder: power vacuum. You can also take veteran and enhanced endurance from vanguard.

Spellbinder - one of the most fun classes to play IMO. It feels really satisfying to melt bosses with the beam lol. Most fragile class early on but has a very long range so it won't matter much. Notable talents are cripple, power vacuum, chaotic rejuvenation, motes of chaos, critical battery, infliction catalyst, unstable burst, shadowmelt, netherwalk. From flameweaver: spell penetration, focalized mana, phoenix if you want. Like the flameweaver, you can also take vanguard talents.

Wyldwarden - before the recent update is the most busted class because of ball lightning. Not sure how it is now. Might struggle at the start because wyld vines has bad windup and short range but easily replaceable with forked lightning. In any case ball lightning is available pretty early. Notable talents are sic em, rejuvenation, spiritual focus, nature's grasp, eruptive brambles, guardian vines, unstable elements. From vindicator: unbreakable spirit, elevated spirit, astral power.

The keys to making casters not too fragile is 1. forgo the trope of them wearing robes or light armor. Wear the heaviest armor you can. Full copper can be worn by all the classes early on. 2. when you come across a defensive node, take con, not def and 3. take talents from the vanguard tree.

Thanks for the tips flushfire. Just a quick question: why use a tower shield if blocking isn’t much help?

It has much higher armor and damage than a light shield. The armor is always given as long as you have it equipped. The damage is where shield charge damage is computed from.
