Great game but wow is it frustrating
Very enjoyable game but very frustrating. Nothing is worst loosing all of your essence especially towards the end where you need about 40k to tank finally get it and die. Then so easily get taken out again and loosing it ALL! This killed the game for me. Hours of grinding for nothing.

To be honest, I don't even know why they keep copying paste this mechanic from Dark Souls. This adds nothing to the game neither it's a challenge. It's just frustrating, like you said, because, if you lose your "souls" you will just have do grind more. I prefer much more the old school diablo version with XP and insta level up.

You farm essence to level up / you farm xp to level up? It's pretty much the same ♥♥♥♥. The only difference is that you just level up when you reach what you need for the next level or you have to go the bonfire or whatever and press a button to level up.

Just a tip, as an exercise, you might want to just visit Rhys and convert your excess essence into items. Think of him as a bank of sorts.

It's the same way with the bonfire resetting the enemies. Dark Souls has thematic and narrative reasons for both mechanics. Most soulslikes just do it because it's what Dark Souls did

That's what I'm saying. They are just copying paste the mechanics.

I knew this. I'm not complaning, I rarey lose "souls" in games like these. But I'm agreeing to the OP because IF YOU DO (and you could die due to a bug or some ♥♥♥♥) would be very frustrating, especially if you lose a lot (like enough for 3 or 4 levels).

Phoenix skill helps A LOT with that problem.
It's a skill in the top of the flameweaver skill tree which resurrects you (even if you fall in a trap). So you can make a big mistake while you try to reach back your lost essence from your previous death.

It's a serious build option for power and strength builds (that would make your build weaker if you are doing a dexterity/spirit build)
Basically, this mechanic is what make a game a true "soulslike".

Yeah unfortunately that's part of the souls experience. It's ok, we all have been through that. It never stops sucking, so only thing we can do is to accept that it's part and parcel of the game. Also, farming souls can be quite simple in the end game; my preferred place to do so is just to do run-through the frozen area. Easy enemies, easy patterns, and not too hard to navigate.

lol...you dont farm anything in diablo you just gain XP. Do you realize the whole purpose in 99% of the games is to level up in some way, right? besides all the mechanics of diablo are completely different. I dont even think you actually played diablo1-4 at all :p in any case that comparisson was completely ridiculous.
