Second, kind of yes, there is a ton of "bosses" that are very easy with a mage and very tough with a melee class if you are not skilled the proper way. But there are also few bosses that end your mage very easily and a melee class is the way to go.
In conclusion, I would say mages are the way to go in Mandragora. There are more enemies, especialy bosses, that seems to be designed with a ranged class in mind to defeat, and even those where a mage have a disadvantage in comparison to a melee class, are easier to make work than the other way around.
Kind of disappoiting if you ask me. I think shields, especialy tower shields, should absorb 100% of damage to make melee classes worthwhile. Like the tower shield bearing bandits in the beginning when they duck behind their shield... immune to melee, but magic goes through.
Are we playing the same game? :) (Also playing a spellbinder)
Mages have spells and melee attacks, warrior and rogue only have melee...

I do like playing melee more, especially the rouge with the movement skill(Shadowstep), just fun to use.
I wish more skill could be used in different specs.
I have not used the difficulty sliders at all, so no clue. But i don't recall ever being one shot by anything except traps, as you can see it my 2nd worst enemy. :)
How far are you in the game?
You can get two any death talents mid to late game, one from Spellbinder and how from Pyro.
Also i was using 2 x con/vigor runes to be able to use the armor i liked.
Ah okay you are early on.
As soon as you kill the "spider witch" you get one of the best spells in the game.
i can understand that fight can be hard, as there is a lot going on and you are missing your tools.
Try to be in melee range and cast your spell, so you always have stamina for dodging.
If you run out of mana, make sure to have plenty of mana pots on you. I did pop a few on that fight.
Sad to hear, as i my self really enjoys the game, but do remember that fight being a bit of a bummer as a Spellbinder the first time.
If you stay in melee, you should be able to dodge behind the boss when it uses the poison spray. It hurts like a truck.
One more hint if you do decide to go for it, you can get good that buff your health by 50 hp, from the inn.
I have expressed how the game should allow melee players using 2 handed weapons (or sword and shield) should be allowed to use spells and abilities without holding a relic. And people investing in the rogue class should be able to use their respective abilities without dual-wielding daggers. It would add a ton of variety to the combat.
But I get the feeling the developers have no intention of changing anything. Some people have shared the same gripes with the combat. But I haven't seen a comment from the dev even acknowledging the topic.
