The dude is dead.
I hear ab this "endgame feature" earlier but how exactly now i can charm something? U guys joking...no NG+, then this...

That is the funny part - you can't

You also can't complete many achievements anymore or craft Greater Orb resources for other NPC recipies

Yeah, I have the same problem... without NG+ there is nothing I can do about this anymore...
And I don't want to start a new save and grind all the stuff AGAIN just because of this.

Who kills off a crucial merchant in a game anyway??? Who thought it was a great idea..

If this thing actually break your gameplay why I care? Its not a spoiler, he literally saying to you he's dying.
It's not a big deal and not so important 2 spoil your adventure, don't be mad. And BTW how u can see - not for all. Sometimes he alive. But idk depends on what conditions it happens.

Anyone know what triggers him living/dying? Like to avoid it if I can especially with there being no NG+

Most likely it's the thing you say to him after completing the ice level.
I've queried Pyromancer about Rhys, and she asked to tell him that she remembered with fondness their time together, which I did. In the end, Rhys was still alive

This did not kill him in my first play through. He is still alive and i am at the last boss.

If he dies, he dies after beating final boss

im pretty sure i choice the "good" answer for him, something like she still remember him, i cant remember now and i dont play in english... but is dead now after i complete the game and... well... wtf xD ?

Maybe it depends on the hero of the game. I got the ending where I was in love with the Witch and gave up everything to resurrect her... in the end, it didn't end well for the world. The vampire became the new king and continued to feed on people. If you behave with restraint - you get the ending where you join the witches in their fight against the Archmages. - maybe this is the case when he stays alive.
