A noble's death
Stuck on this quest, just went through the laboratory and the tower (used the key) but I can't see a way up?

It's because one of the earlier rooms you went in, you forgot about. Once you activate the steam generator, it isn't just for going up the book cases, there is a door that will take you to a room with 2 enemies, a polearm vampire and a crossbow one, the elevator works in that room now.
