I pretty much have a constant light shield up, the spinning hammers do quite good damage against bosses, who are often large and take almost the full brunt of the spell if you carefully position your cast, the minor heal on every astral spell (10 sec cooldown) is very nice.
Granted, I'm not melting enemies, but it's the tried and true paladin archetype that I've come to know and expect from games. I hit things with a hammer, heal myself and wear tanky armor with the appropriate stats (magic, knowledge, spirit, lightbrand %).
Once you unlock and craft Caloe's embrace set, you really start falling into the paladin experience. Unfortunately that's decently far into the game.
I haven't played other classes but I imagine the purple magic one, forget its name, voidbringer? I imagine that one is quite OP as that class seems to be the developers favorite, I notice quite a lot of gear dedicated to that class, more so than others, so take that for what you will.
That said, the passive that makes you heal a 50+ hp chunk every time you cast an astral spell works well with it, since it takes only 2 mana to do a quick tap of the skill, and you get 50+ hp real fast.
But I will agree, as I havent tried out other spell casters, it feels like the astral spells are more support while melee, than actual casting. Probably why its positioned right next to the entirely melee tree/class
This is the key takeaway, note where the vindicator is placed among the other trees. Every class links to two other trees, in the middle of the extreme sides of each tree. The vindicator connects to the warrior class (focused on heavy melee and defense) and the wyldwarden (druid) class (magical support). That makes perfect sense as the vindicator is a (lesser) combination of those two things.
Vindicator is not a heavy caster, you shouldn't expect to be blasting enemies away with holy magic. You bonk them with a magic-enhanced weapon and heal yourself here and there whilst your higher defense and light shield absorb the rest.
Sadly, they feel like they designed the game with a little bit of grinding in mind. Like...you have to kinda go out and kill stuff a few times to progress far enough to have a more valid and complete build. I mean, even the bounty board quests are basically "Kill 10-15 of this monster you likely already killed 25 times"
And the bestiary requires a varying number of kills, likely more than you would see going through most areas 2-3 times fully.
I think much later on once you have the spirit scaler for armor, the extra spirit from wield damage tree left side, and the wield armor on attack you can probably just become a tanky auto attack god scaling armor to get the thorns. At least thats what I am working towards, but its quite far away level wise.
I mean, if its anything like most gameplay styles of this nature, the class is less about firing holy lasers and blasting the undead to the moon, its about sustain, self recovery, consistent damage and being moderately tanky.
You can inflict lightbrand with auto attacks from weapons with astral dmg split. I plan to branch to the right into druid later. And will prolly use nature relic.
I really hop so. Im lvl 33 and I still cannot face tank anything. Though I just unlocked proper armor set for vindicator. And made new mace. Hope it will go uphill after.
cannot agree
spinning hammers + consecration is good combo and u face tank easily
also - spinning hammers are the only effective enemy melting ability
well that is the arsenal of this class sadly. i expected more and few times was thinking to start with a new class
