Is the translation as bad in the full game?
Like honestly I feel like even modern machine translation is better than whatever's going on in the demo.

Is the game even story heavy?

The main game's translation is actually pretty good. I'm currently at chapter 3 and there are some confusing bits but I'm 99% sure that it's intentionally meant to be confusing until they reveal things later in the story because the dialogue is really well translated.

Pretty sure the demo's confusing because they picked a late game area to turn into a demo so it's kinda impossible to follow along the dialogue. I might be wrong though because I barely remember the demo.

I haven't played the demo myself; but the translation isn't great.
I wouldn't say it's "bad" by any means, but it's obvious that it was translated by someone using machine translation for some parts. It's not a AAA title, so don't expect a AAA quality translation.
Some lines "feel awkward" to read, but you can still understand the general meaning.

That being said, I was able to still understand the game's story. It only broke immersion a few times in total.

Yes, the game is fairly story heavy, i would say. The story segments aren't normally very long, but there are a fair number of them during chapters.
Felt well balanced and intentionally kept brief at points before some major encounters, so I never felt like pushing the story to "get on with it!" like in some other games.
(There is also a "skip" button that lets you rush it along, which is helpful when you get wiped out by a boss and have to repeat.....)

I honestly haven't seen any point in the game where the translation felt off other than the inventory item descriptions, which is understandable considering it's a lot harder to fit an item description in english in a small text box when in japanese you can just abbreviate entire words to single characters.
Then again I'm just at chapter 3

Yeah, considering the amount of text in the game ; "a few times in total" isn't much at all. I can't remember any of the specific lines or points..... I recall it being mostly in question during the "main" part of the game (Chapters 1 - 7).

( Postscript after Chapter 7 is long! It also felt like it had a better translation, come to think of it. I expect it was written later with more knowledge or better translation resources. )

( You might even say it's about as long as the "main" game, lol )
