The other 3 seem kinda equal to me, their strengths are more situational than Jade's, but I like the diversity and I think they are all fun.
I'd say Jade >>>> Ruby>Topaz>Sapphire.
I really like the Samurai but his defense stacking doesn't do ♥♥♥♥ to half the enemies you encounter mid game and later and his dash cards are a bit too costly.
Ruby wins just due to mobility, Topaz is pretty neat but takes a bit too long to get going.
My favourite character !
Red's great if you get a Fly card early on, absolutely unstoppable.
By beating the Summoning mission. Which is a brilliant mission BTW.
Ruby is great. Their card draw will let whatever else you want to do work better. Flying is my favourite along with some sort of efficient attack. They can also do fine just dashing.
Sapphire can be un manoeuvrable - charges are good but restricted. They are tanky and can do spikes or AOE damage well and work fine.
I have had fun with Jade and 0 cost attacks including Kunai. They (I) really want to get stealth going and there's only a couple of cards that do that (flying is much easier for Ruby). They have good dashes & can use those & energy to move & generate lots of free attacks. I have not had much luck with poison. It feels a bit slow and expensive to apply much. If the stars align with your starting cards it may be OK but it feels risky to take blind.
Topaz seems the most awkward to use - I see why they were left until last. Their AOE are powerful but a lot of their abilities are very expensive and they need to get a few cards that work together well before they can to very much at all - unlike the others who seem to improve incrementally with each new card (to a point). I have had fun summoning totems with massively powerful "ephemeral" attacks that weren't due to the totems. Also had fun spamming AOE, which do a lot of damage for the energy if you can get groups.
Ruby makes great use of a little more energy (like +3 total) and draw (+2/3, less important) and as much strength as you can. Especially because he can fly. (but it's fun one shotting the last boss despite him having 1 pillar left)
Sapphire I didn't play much, but given how costly his movement cards are, I'd wager energy is high on priority, followed by defense and max hp
Jade was the one I enjoyed the most, and he is the least energy hungry (2 is enough) of the bunch, but he makes great use of either a lot of draw (if going for statut build) or strenght (kunai shred build).
Topaz needs a lot of energy to be efficient (aim for +5) because her moves skills are way too costly (they all want to move and do something on top, making them really not efficient to do either) and her most powerful attacks require either a LOT of energy (8) or some setup.
She also have to deal with a trap : she have a non etherial card which duplicate if you kill with it, jamming your deck with too many of a decent-but-not-so-great spell.
I would argue that she actually have the best move card in the game : "vantage point" (1 cost teleport 3/4 tiles away with a conditional upside ). Not only can she bypass tiles with monsters and water, like the fly abilty of Rubis, but her teleport mechanic also have the unique abilty to bypass "void" between islands in some maps, which is both very fun to juke enemies and very strong. Overall I actually think she have the best mobility of the 4 characters due to that flexibility.
She also have a stupidly strong attack called "distant bolt" that can reach 5 tiles away for more that 30 damage for 1 cost . As long as you can reniew it by keeping a thin deck with a summon card, you can basically turn the game in a turret defense which is also very funny.
That being said, I tried to do the final mission with all characters and she seems to be the only one unable to kill the last boss without destroying all pillars first (probably possible using the "vulnerabilty" mechanic, but that would be extremely slow and tedious...).
The strongest character for that goal is Jade since he can just poison the boss until death without even needing to destroy a single pillar.
Overall I would say all the characters are balanced by being equally broken haha.
But my least favorit is probably Sapphire since his movement cards are very restrictive and I prefer more flexibility.
I totally agree that vantage point is one of (if not THE) best move spell in the game, but it's also a rare card. If you can get even one of them, then it's great, but more often than not you'll be left with lackluster options to teleport (costing up to 3 for 3 moves). It's more consistent to aim for high energy max Imho.
For the last boss, did you try a spirit build? provided you use the card dealing damage with the number of spirit card in the deck, and with upgrading said spirit card (to get them to be free most of the time) it may be possible. I'm not sure.
