I use a controller for it, personally. Mouse controls for combat are horrid.

Just re-bind them. I have E+Q as movement, arrows for tech changing, and ASDF for the face buttons.

On a controller it feels exactly like the original games did. It's a little janky but you have to remember you're not controlling your monster, you're giving him suggestions, so you should feel a little distanced from it.

Here is a list of every control in the game to make rebinding keys easier to make something comfy for yourself

A set up I am using that works for me on keyboard now is this.

Q and E: left and right
W and s: up and down.
A and D: lb and rb
C : confirm (attack)
F: knockback.

And i juat use the mouse for menu navigation. This lets me use a and d for left right movment in battle and qewa for changing techs. Another option is left click on the technique button and right click for knockback

Its not explained so probably 90% of people don't know this but Guts determines your offensive and defense power in a battle. Ideally you want your guts higher than your opponents at all time. You get a hidden bonus to hit rate and dodge rate and some other stats depending on your guts value in the fight. Generally people will wait until like 99 guts before they even attack. This is why contrary to what you would think monsters with slow guts regen are typically not favored in the game and are actually really bad like Dragon. Dragon has the worst guts rate in the game if i remember properly making him one of the least viable monsters in the game despite lore wise and the game itself telling you otherwise. If your opponent guts is higher than yours you get even more penalties. So my advice is not to spam so much keep your guts high ( I personally always keep it above 50 ). If you hit 99 guts on like a golem and the enemy blows all his down to 1 your brow hit will most likely 100% hit and 1 shot them. This is how youre suppose to play the game and its why they originally made the AI not spam moves below 45 guts so they wouldnt kill themselves to guts mechanics and constantly have 1-2 guts like they do now lmao. They actually made the game easier IMO with the 45 guts restriction removal on AI because they just spam like crazy now and never have any guts. You can get through the Big 4 on your first monster now without much issue.

Sounds like you’re trying to paraphrase MrMooseBones, but you’re doing it incorrectly.

Guts does play a small part in hit chance, damage done, damage taken etc, but it’s really not that significant.

Don’t give out incorrect information.

Keep an eye on hit percentages as you drift in and out of ranges of different attacks. some attacks miss more frequently than others. So, in tougher fights it can be wise try to find a sweet spot distance between you and your opponent. Though be careful as some attacks that won't hit you easily can be the ones to one shot you. That said, try to find either the weakest chance to hit or the weakest damage dealing attack of your opponent. Pay attention to your own as well and move in to the attack you want when the time is right then back off (or move back in) to whatever your sweet spot is for that opponent.

Also, don't expect every monster to be a champ. don't rush your monsters into tournaments. You will improve your ranch over time which will help you raise better monsters. In other words , it's normal to feel like you don't get the combat early on, but it may be that your monster never had a chance to get any farther than you got it. At least in the first game. haven't really tried two. Though I could be wrong maybe people have raised Dino or Tiger right out the gate to be an S tier champ. Not what I ever really expect to do.
